Summary
|
Results of a pilot study of 119 hips revealed optimum results with HA coated cups and cemented femoral components. McMinn performed 1085 consecutive hip resurfacings from 1994, 294 McMinn type then 791 Birmingham type. Mean age 53. 5 failed in each group. Survival at 5-6 yrs thus 98%.
Analysis of 206 pt (27 bilateral) in paid employment reveals all returned to work within 7.1 weeks, and 169 participated in recreational or competitive sport!!

Summary

Historical failure due to wear debris and subsequent bone resorption, resulting in loosening. Surface replacement with metal on metal bearing allows thin component design with instruments to avoid varus malalignment. 235 jts in 5 years, no #, no dislocation. 4 designs (press fit -> 6/70 revised for aseptic loosening), cemented (cup debonding in 3/43), HA coated (6, all excellent), hybrid (116 with excellent outcome).
