Title

Mechanical Factors in Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

Reference

J Paediatr. Orthop1988;8: 385-8

Summary

3-D Force analysis of 50 SUFE vs 50 normal hips showed decreased anteversion + neck shaft-plate shaft angle in over-wt pts increases sagital sheer stress

Critique

Possibly not well matched. Mathematical calculations reliant on other studies.

Title

The Association of Femoral Retroversion with SCFE

Reference

JBJS 1986 Vol.68 A: 1000-1007

Summary

CT measurement of femoral neck version in 39 hips – 18 hips (Grp 1) at diagnosis + 21 hips (Grp 2) post pinning showed mean anteversion of 1 degree cf 6 degrees on unaffected side and 15-20 degrees in normal population.

Critique

Well written paper answering specific question with reasonable no. of pts. Measurement of version in normals made from XR/cadavers rather than CT.

Title

Artroscopy for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

Reference

J Paediatr. Orthop1992; 12: 592-597

Summary

Arthroscopy in 5 pts with SUFE showed cartilaginous erosions, labral scuffing and haematoma suggesting traumatic cause. Pain was relieved and early motion improved.

Critique

Small nos. No mention of complications. Only 2 pts presented acutely - ? damage post slip.
