201 patients: 102 on indomethacin (25 mg tds) vs 99 on placebo for 6/52 post-op. At one year f/u, HO in 13% indomethacin patients (all grade I lesion) vs 75% placebo. 50% placebo group had grade II or III lesion (DeLee)

Critique

Double-blind randomised trial but randomisation method not stated. 12 patients wanted to be taken off the medication but reasons not stated.

Summary

62 at risk hips (55 patients): 34 hips received a single 800 cGy limited-field radiation vs 28 received 1000 cGy (within 4/7 post-op). At 6/12 f/u, progression of HO noticed in 21% both groups. Extra-field ossification occurred in 31% hips.
