Fibula Fractures

Mechanism of Injury

These fractures may occur in association with external rotation and abduction injuries of the ankle or from direct trauma. The majority of these fractures are spiral type fractures and the fracture site may vary from neck to lower shaft.

Clinical Features

The patient complains of pain following injury. There is localised tenderness and the patient is able to weight bear and move the affected leg.

X-rays are needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Associated Injuries

Isolated fractures of the fibula are often associated with injures around the ankle and thus should be also be x-rayed. The integrity of the lateral popliteal nerve may be compromised in fractures of the fibular neck.
