Fracture Complications

These can be of a general nature, local - involving structures around the fracture site or those that are applicable to all fractures.

General complications

  • Association with internal haemorrhage
  • Shock
  • Metabolic responses to trauma
  • External haemorrhage and infection - open fractures only
  • Hypostatic pneumonia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Deep vein thrombosis leading to pulmonary embolism
  • Pressure sores
  • Muscle wasting
  • Demineralisation of the bone.
